For Theater Artists & Practitioners

We are natural creative problem solvers

A Theater artist

Theater for Humanity depends on a bold, compassionate Theater Artist who is willing to sacrifice their personal perspective for the growth of their community or the community they are serving.

Acting, Writing & Directing

To effectively implement Theater for Humanity you need to be confident in your acting, writing and directing ability. You will teach acting to the participants. Then, you will write an original play based on their stories and direct them in the creation of the community performance.

Conflict Groups & Dynamic Groups

The artist needs an understanding of conflict groups and how they develop and change. Also, you will need to have a basic understanding of dynamic group therapy or simply how groups evolve and change.

MAKE & INHABIT A NEW WORLD

Theater is a place for storytelling through recreation. It humanizes the experiences of people who are voiceless & carries a people’s history.

THEATER

The primary purpose of theater is to share the experience of another reality embodied by the theater artist. What distinguishes theater from other forms of storytelling is that, when creating a theatrical piece, theater makers work to create a world that they then become a part of;  they then present that world to an audience.

ACTING PROCESS

Theater for Humanity is designed to instruct police officers and formerly incarcerated persons in acting techniques designed to build human relationships.

THE ACTOR

The curriculum teaches formerly incarcerated men and police officers the core principles of acting. Participants learn the acting process in order to learn about, recreate and live through the experiences of the other participants in the room.

Workshop Series

Devised theater is a form of theater where the script originates not from a writer or writers, but from collaborative, usually improvisatory, work by a group of people.

“HeartBEAT” was devised in the workshops of Theater for Humanity where police officers, formerly incarcerated men and artists shared stories about family, their interactions with the justice system and the pivotal moments in their lives that led to their current situation. To complete the play, Run On Productions will host 2-month workshop series to complete the play. Police officers, formerly incarcerated men and theater practitioners will come together at the Bridge Art Space to devise a completed work that will be performed in September for the city.

Site-specific theater

Site-specific theater emphasizes particular stories and events that reveal the complex relationship between ourselves and our physical environment.

In Richmond, the fear, the thoughts, the memory of violence has transformed common spaces around the city into spaces that are defined as being unsafe. These are spaces that remind us of past killings and other violent acts. These are the spaces that we do not travel to, that we avoid. But these spaces are spaces that someone calls home. In response to the need to reclaim these spaces, “HeartBEAT” will be performed at a site to be selected by the actors in the city of Richmond that needs to be redefined by residents as one where healing takes place.

Community Dialogue

The performances will be spaces for conversations about gun violence in Richmond. Audience members will discuss and learn about how being a victim of violence, being around violence, and the threat of violence impacts daily life in the City. The purpose of this will be create a sense of emotional healing, reconciliation, restoration and empowerment.
